Career Overview

Qualified in November 1975. Joined Field Fisher Waterhouse in May 1983.

Rodney was part of the legal team which acted for the successful Claimants Fox and Matthews in what are known as the Fairchild Appeals.

In February 2001 asbestos disease claimants received a devastating blow.  A High Court judged ruled in a case of death due to mesothelioma (a fatal asbestos related tumour) that, since the victim had worked with asbestos for several employers and it was not possible to identify in which employment he had breathed the asbestos fibre which killed him, he could not recover damages against any of them.  This decision, which was upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2001, reversed the previous practice whereby all such employers contributed to the damages.

Rodney was invited to join the legal team in January 2002 and played a very active role in the preparation of the House of Lords appeal, carrying out legal research and providing briefing papers to Sir Sidney Kentridge, Q.C. The House of Lords upheld the appeal in May 2002, and it has proved possible to recover damages in mesothelioma cases ever since.

Rodney's role in the appeal, together with his 25 years as a personal injury claims lawyer and author, was recognised later that year when he received the APIL award for Outstanding Achievement.
