£1.4million recovered for mesothelioma victim

A FOCIS member law firm has obtained one of the highest awards in a mesothelioma case. In 2007 a gifted entrepreneur appeared on the Dragon's Den television programme and obtained backing from two of the dragons for his start up business specialising in child seat belts. Sadly, he contracted mesothelioma from which he died at the age of 47 in 2008. Consequently the business never became the success story which had been anticipated.

His widow claimed damages for herself and their baby. The FOCIS member law firm enlisted the aid of a leading forensic accountant. Complex calculations of the loss of profit from the new business were carried out. After much dispute with his former asbestos employers' insurers, the claim was settled for £1.4m early in 2009. The Senior Master at the High Court approved the settlement and described it as very wise.
